MCB, or Miniature Circuit Breaker, is a critical defender of electrical circuits. It mainly protects these circuits from overload and short-circuit events.
The MCB employs a specialized mechanical switch. When the current crosses a predetermined limit, this switch disconnects the circuit.
However, remember that MCBs aren’t responsible for protecting against electric shocks from ‘earth leakage’. RCDs and RCBOs take on this safety role instead.
MCBs come in three primary curve types – Type B, Type C, and Type D. TThese types represent the peak Prospective Fault Current (PFC) that the MCB can manage, maintaining functionality even after disconnection.
Looking at the components, an MCB includes a latch, solenoid, switch, and plunger. It also houses an incoming terminal, arc chutes holder, arc chutes, dynamic contact, and fixed contact. In addition, it features a Din rail holder, outgoing terminal, bi-metallic strip carrier, and a bi-metallic strip.
